Dentistry:

Dentistry is defined as the science that is concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases of the teeth, gums, and related structures of the mouth, including the repair or replacement of defective teeth. Dentists work on improving the appearance of their patients. Their treatments for oral and dental disorders include surgical, medical and other forms. They fill, crown and scale the teeth, do tooth extraction and artificial replacements etc.
To pursue a course in dentistry, i.e., Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS), one must have completed 10+2 in science stream (Physics, Chemistry and Biology). For masters degree (MDS) aspirants must have completed BDS course. BDS is a four-year course, which is followed by a one-year internship. Subjects taught include basic anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and microbiology among others. In order to practice as a dentist it is mandatory to register with the Dental Council of India. Basically a dentist’s service is the most sought-after to maintain a healthy mouth and teeth. They do multifarious jobs such as restoration of teeth, filling of cavities, examine the oral cavity, treatment of gums, extraction of teeth, fix dentures, etc. Dental surgeons do complicated surgeries such as root canal treatment, jaw alignment, teeth whitening, dental implants and porcelain veneers. Other complicated tasks performed by dentists are magnetic resonance imaging, trauma surgery, implants, tissue grafts and laser surgery. Job opportunities exist in government hospitals, health centres, nursing homes, dental clinics, health departments. In addition, dentists can also setup their own practice. Those with higher qualifications can opt for teaching jobs in dental colleges. Dentists as work as consultants in pharmaceutical companies that prepares dental care products.
